Emily Douglas is a native Californian who now happily calls Southeast Michigan her home. She is a writer and authors the thought provoking and wide ranging blog called The Unexamined Dog. After completing her M.A. in Educational Studies at the University of Michigan, she volunteered for a local pit bull rescue group through which she fostered and adopted a puppy named Peaches. Emily and Peaches (whose visits are affectionally known as "Peach Therapy") are a registered therapy dog team through Therapy Dogs Incorporated and Intermountain Therapy Animals' R.E.A.D. program and volunteer with local schools, hospitals and other organizations throughout Southeast Michigan. In this interview, Emily discusses the impetus behind her following "the road not taken" and the surprising evolution of Peaches into a therapy dog. The origins and advantages of children reading to dogs is also discussed, as well as interesting anecdotes of "Peach Therapy."
